Q&A With local artist Elroy – PLUS a Giveaway!

Who: Elroy Ink

Where: Online  and some lovely shops

We recently discovered another inspiring local creative, Elroy Ink !  Elroy, is a local graphic designer who moonlights as an artist (amongst other things) creating beautiful prints for your walls! We just love them and after spotting them in one of our favourite shops Ballyhoo Art a few weeks back we couldn’t resist the opportunity to find out a little more about the man behind these happy, simplistic and Oh so easy to live with prints. We hope you enjoy our little Q&A with the super talented Elroy from Elroy Ink

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what lead you to creating these wonderful artworks?

I’m a tertiary qualified Graphic Designer (Swinburne Uni)  and I’ve been doing commercial design work for about 15 years. My motivation with the Elroy ink artwork is to get away from the things I deal with on an everyday basis such as text, image and iconography. Elroy ink is a reaction against this I guess, into a more pure form of design expression through colour and shape.

‘Elroy’ is your alter ego, your real name is actually Ken Lawson (yes, we are super spies) What is the story behind the name?

Those darn super spies! Elroy came into being in 1995, he was my alter ego rock ‘n’ roll persona. It did help that I was in a band otherwise it may have been a little strange. Elroy was (and still is) the lead singer and guitarist of indie 3 piece band Oscarlima. When I started designing the prints it seemed more appropriate to attribute them to Elroy rather than my everyday persona.

You are a Graphic Designer by trade but do you hope to one day focus solely on your art and the Elroy brand?

Yes, that would be a perfect situation for me. I would love to earn a living wholly on my artistic merits. Not that I dislike my day job – it still offers an opportunity for me to design/create, but I would love not to answer to a brief and not have to explain to someone that logos and headings don’t have to be centre justified and fill the page to be effective.

What bought you and your family to the Geelong Coastal Region? And what do you love about this town?

Initially we wanted to move further down the coast but as my wife was still commuting to  Melbourne for work at the time, Geelong just seemed a perfect balance between coastal living and big city life. I guess that’s what I really like about Geelong – it offers the work/life balance that so many of us seek.

Where was the last great meal you had in Geelong? And drink?

Cheating a bit, but the last great meal I had was at Loam in Drysdale, a real gastronomic experience. If I go for a few drinks, I’ll usually drop by the Diggers Arms.

You have a background in music, we’d love to know what tunes you listen to while you get creative.

Gee, where to start? Wilco, Radiohead, Midlake, Fiona Apple, Arcade Fire, Rufus Wainwright … ‘insert about six thousand other artists’… and the Beatles of course!

What are your biggest inspirations? Favourite artists, people, books etc?

I have always been a huge admirer of Picasso’s work. I really like illustrators Sanna Annukka, Nate Williams and cannot go past Saul Bass for anything graphic design. I follow Stephen Fry, Dr Karl and Arj Barker on Twitter and am mad about Collingwood FC … sorry Cats fans :(

What is next for Elroy? Do you have any big plans for the future?

I would like to do a pop-up shop in Geelong but just need to find the right space. In November I’m aiming to do Markit@fed Square. Then of course the world – mwah, ha, ha, ha, haaa.

Do you have a quote or saying that you live by?

No, but my kids may tell you differently. “I wants don’t get.”

Thanks Elroy!!

And… if you are lusting after the Elroy Ink prints as much as we are, you’ll be excited to know that Elroy has very generously donated a copy of his print ‘Arches’ to one very lucky reader! Woot! This print is from the Open edition range and is an unframed A2 sized (420mm x 594mm or 16.5 x 23.4 inches) Giclée print, printed on 240gsm archival paper and signed by Elroy himself.

Oh my goodness, how awesome is that!

There are places in the world that are musts…when you’re in Paris it’s the Eiffel Tower, in New York it’s the Statue of Liberty, when you’re in Rome it’s the Colosseum (you get the idea!). Well, when you’re in Geelong, an absolute shopping must is the one and only GOOSE located in the beautiful suburb of East Geelong.  Oh! Hello Geelong have been GOOSE devotees since we landed in our new home town and so of course we were absolutely delighted and more than a little chuffed when invited to explore this piece of G-Town shopping heaven before Saturday morning opening time! Woo hoo!

The brains behind this beauty….

So a store like GOOSE doesn’t just happen, it’s the product of years of hard work, bucket loads of determination and a generous sprinkle of retail intelligence and GOOSE’S owner Kristen is the woman behind it all. Kristen is one of those super women who has the knack for business and a natural flare for trend forecasting, she’s also got a pretty active creative gene. Kristen is a Geelong local who studied visual merchandising at RMIT, where she found herself spending considerable time and money sourcing products for her course work, a task she loved. In the final year of her degree and at the tender age of 20, she decided that she was ready to start her own business and immediately began the search for the perfect location. After many hours of driving, she stumbled across 91 Garden Street and was instantly taken by the village feel of the local shopping area and believed that the light shining into the store via the green perspex roof was a call to her from the heavens! With the help of her family, in particular her adorable and wise mum Gloria, Kristen opened the doors of GOOSE 16 years ago and has never looked back.

GOOSE’S style has evolved over the years, however it maintains the fun, quirky and playful spirit that Kristen originally envisioned when putting the store together. Kristen has managed to create a store that is an experience, almost like flicking through a magazine, which she has achieved by the clever layering of fragrance, music and merchandising. GOOSE’S range has grown from gifts and homewares and now includes children’s and women’s fashion, toys and women’s accessories.

Uncovering the layers…

GOOSE always seems to be bursting with beautiful and fun products, so trying to compile a list things we love is a pretty impossible task, so here’s a snap shot of just some of Oh! Hello Geelong’s favourites!

Fashion and Accessories; We love Elk and Goose has a MASSIVE range of their clothing, bags and jewellery. Also on offer is a fab selection of Obus, Body, Apple & Bee, Soludos shoes, Nancybird, Octoberdee & Sunny Life bags as well a an impressive collection of jewellery by some of our favs; Polli, Love Hate, Emily Green.

Home Wares; Cushions by Nancybird and Curio & Curio … Ceramics, tea ware and dinner ware by labels including, Jansen, Rob Ryan, Have You Met Miss Jones, Orla kiely and Angus & Celeste

And some gorgeous screen printed goods by Bonnie and Neil.

For the Kiddos; Gorgeous clothing labels including Toshi, Tutu Du Monde, Little HornBIG by Fiona Scanlan and Pure Baby. Loads of super cool toys and crafty things, we especially thought that Seedling’s amazing roll out chalkboard was a pretty neat idea, so much so that one was bought just for Little Alexander!

Art and Stationery; Beci Orpin, Catherine Campbell , Naomi Murrell and Curio & Curio are amongst the beautiful Art prints in store. And we also loved the generous range of Semicolon stationery and awesome card ranges by Lagom, Rifle Paper and Melbournes Able & Game.

As for Kristen, her personal GOOSE favourite was not divulged, however she did say that she loves pieces that have a story behind them and has a soft spot for one-off pieces that she comes across in her own exploration.

goose picsThat special touch…

GOOSE really goes that one step further when it comes to making shopping an experience. The store itself really is a pleasure to explore; there always seems to be something new or unexpected with every visit; Kristen and her team really have mastered the art of displays! Kristen has used her creative skills to build all her own display units and even made her own lampshades which are gracefully dotted throughout the store. Apart from stocking gorgeous products, GOOSE offers a giftwrapping service and super cute GOOSE bags and pouches (designed by Kristen). We seriously wonder if Kristen sleeps…not only is she the GOOSE wiz but she is also a busy mum to three beautiful and bouncy girls, amazing!

goose pics

There’s no denying it, we are GOOSE fans through and through and we can confidently say that most G-towners would also share the love for this super cool little gem that has become a G-Town institution.

Thanks Kristen, Gloria and Leanne for sharing your time with us and for uncovering GOOSE’S many, many, many layers!

Love Penny + Laura

PS: An extra special thank you to Gloria whose wisdom on life and love is priceless.
